We Love Markets

Happy Hammock loves markets and loves to support fellow market traders by trading with them.  A lot of goods that we buy from markets are not suitable for sale on the internet. This is usually because each item is unique. Therefore they are usually sold directly or at summer / Christmas events. For a full listing of where we will be in the up-coming months please go to our Events page.

Souk - Marrakesh

Happy-Hammock has been visiting Morocco and Marrakesh for many years on a personal travel basis. The souk never ceases to fascinate us. It’s a love/hate relationship. It can be difficult at times but once you work out the layout it’s an amazing place to source goods.  Of course, a lot of these goods have been on sale in the West for many years now. However, that does not stop our desire to explore Morocco’s rich Artisan community. The work they do with leather is of particular interest to us.

Moroccan Slippers

Markets

We bought our first pair of Moroccan Leather slippers c. 10 years ago and have been buying them ever since.  They are perfect for wearing around the house and in the garden (when not wet!) and are a great alternative to bear feet or heavy wool slippers.  Moroccan Slippers are on sale on line and at events.

Tanneries and Artisans

Markets

The pictures shown here were taken in the Marrakesh Souk. If you explore some of the back alleys of the souk you will find these men making the slippers and people trading the raw leather. You can also visit one of the tanneries just outside the souk. Many tourists visit this souk in the heart of Marrakesh each year. It can be daunting to the new visitor but with a little courage, calmness and persistence it can be a wonderful and rewarding shopping experience.

For tips on how to get the best out of the souk please visit our travel blog.

San Cristobal De Las Casas – Mexico

Markets

The Artisans market in San Cristobal De Las Casas is around the Santo Domingo church and is open every day. All of the local villages come here to trade. It is an excellent place to see.

Chatuchak – Bangkok, Thailand

Well for people who love markets this really is the mother of them all ... so far. Just off the Sky Train (Mo Chit stop) this is one of the largest markets we have ever been to. It is not for the faint hearted.

We wouldn’t suggest bringing a man here unless he’s strong and calm. Make sure you get a map at one of the gates and drink lots of water to keep you hydrated. That said, it’s a wonderful place to explore. One day isn’t really enough (we only ever last a few hours at a time) you can keep coming back here and finding new interesting traders. This place never seems to end!

Markets

Thitima
Our only supplier here so far is Thitima.  She has been making unusual bags out of tribal clothes from the North of Thailand for a few years. These are only sold privately or via our events as each one is different and not suitable for internet sales.

For more info on where we will be selling these please see our events listing or email direct at - info@happy-Hammock.com.

Russian Market – Phnom Penh, Cambodia

The Russian Market in Phnom Penh is a place full to the brim of goodies.  There is also a good food area in the middle where you can stop for a quick cold drink or some cheap delicious noodles.  Beware through, it is covered and it can get pretty hot and sweaty in here. We have a lot of plain silk scarves in block vibrant colours ... see the pictures below. These look great on the stall.
